How to save energy.

These days, it’s more of a win-win than ever to save on energy. These days, it’s more of a win-win than ever to save on energy. Here’s a list of some ideas to get you started.

  1. Plant a tree. One well-placed shade tree can reduce your cooling costs by 25 percent.
  2. During late afternoon and early evening, turn off unnecessary lights and wait to use heat-producing appliances.
  3. Keep plantings at least one foot away from your central air conditioning unit for adequate airflow.
  4. Use More Energy-efficient Appliances.
  5. Minimize phantom loads.
  6. When using the fireplace, turn down the furnace to 55 degrees. If you don’t, all the warm air from the furnace will go right up the chimney, wasting energy and money.
  7. If your home has a boiler system, avoid covering radiators with screens or blocking them with furniture.
  8. Don’t let heat escape from your house over a long period.
  9. Replace your old single-glazed windows with double-glazing.
  10. Cover your pots while cooking.
  11. Be sure you’re recycling at home.
  12. Recycle your organic waste.
  13. Choose products that come with little packaging and buy refills when you can.
  14. Reuse your shopping bag.
  15. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen.
  16. Buy organic foods as much as possible.
  17. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible.
  18. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle.
  19. Encourage your school or business to reduce emissions.
  20. Protect and conserve forest worldwide.
  21. Consider the impact of your investments.
  22. Don’t set the thermostat higher than you actually want it. It won’t heat your home any faster, and it will keep your furnace running longer than necessary.
  23. Vacuum registers and vents regularly, and don’t let furniture and draperies block the air flow. Inexpensive plastic deflectors can direct air under tables and chairs.
  24. If you have hardwood or tile floors, add area rugs to keep your feet warm.
  25. During the winter, remove window air conditioners and seal the windows with caulk and weather-stripping. You might also want to cover the central air compressor with a tarp to keep it clean.

All it takes is a few minutes each month, and you’ll notice a difference – and make a difference!
